CHALLENGES

Challenges facing agriculture

SOCIAL

Worldwide demand for food, animal feed and fuel will continue to rise as overall population growth is on track to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, requiring a  70 per cent increase in calories.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Increasing pressures from climate change, soil erosion and catastrophic weather events. Currently, 12 million hectares of agricultural land is lost annually to land degradation. Likewise, by 2030 the water supply will fall 40 per cent short of meeting global water needs.

ECONOMIC

Rising energy, labour, and nutrient costs are already pressuring profit margins. Similarly, the economic impact of catastrophic weather events in the future will lead to supply chain disruption across agricultural supply chains
